Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra's Children's Concert - April 14, 2009

Each year the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, working with the school corporations in Vigo and surrounding counties, invites all 4th and 5th grade classes to attend its annual free Children’s Concert. Attendance is now at nearly 4000 students from seven counties throughout the Wabash Valley.

This concert is designed to familiarize the children with the various orchestral instruments, how these instruments work together in an orchestra, and how to listen to and enjoy music with which they may be unfamiliar.

Realizing that "making music" can be fun encourages students to participate in school based music programs--orchestra, band, chorus and glee clubs. We are convinced that being introduced to various kinds of music at a young age adds a life-long cultural dimension to a student’s education.

To ensure that all students may attend, families are not asked to contribute. The $20,000 cost of this concert is funded through grants and donations from individuals, foundations and financial institutions. And something special this year!

The children from Van Duyn and Ernie Pyle Schools - both from South Vermillion School system - made a special presentation to the THSO.  They collected "Nickels for Notes" to support the symphony and gave $75.00.  To Dr. David Bowden's right is their teacher, Maria Sellers.

One unfortunate group of children from Turkey Run School in Parke County never made it to the concert - their school bus was involved in an accident and some children and adults were taken to the hospital for treatment. To make sure they have a chance to watch and listen, an ISU brass quintet featuring THSO players played a concert for everyone in their school from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The symphony extends best wishes for a speedy recovery to everyone involved.
