José Francisco Salgado, PhD

José Francisco Salgado is an Emmy-nominated astronomer, experimental photographer, visual artist, and public speaker who creates multimedia works that communicate science in engaging ways. As the Executive Director and co-founder of KV 265, a non-profit science and arts education organization, Dr. Salgado collaborates with orchestras, composers, and musicians to present films that provoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about the Earth and the Universe. His Science & Symphony films have been presented in 260 concerts and 215 lectures reaching a combined audience of more than 480,000 people in 21 countries. Orchestras that have presented these works include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, the San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony, and the Orchestra Teatro Regio Torino.

Artistic Director-Designate, Dr. Roger Kalia

The THSO is also excited to welcome recently appointed Artistic Director-Designate Dr. Roger Kalia to join Artistic Director Dr. David Bowden in conducting the concert. Dr. Kalia was announced as the THSO’s next Artistic Director beginning in July 2025 upon Dr. Bowden’s retirement from the THSO in a press release on March 19th. Dr. Kalia guest conducted the THSO in November 2022 and made an immediate connection with the orchestra and audience.

“We have the great privilege of securing an inspiring and exciting conductor, a superb community engagement advocate, and simply a great human being - to assume the Artistic Director role for our 2025-26 season and lead us into the future. I’m thrilled to re-introduce Roger to the community during Music of the Heavens!” notes Dr. Bowden.

The THSO will also partner with Indiana State University and the John C. Hook Observatory to offer concert attendees the opportunity to view celestial objects through telescopes that will be set up outside in the plaza directly in front of Tilson Auditorium. The Observatory will be set up starting at 4pm to view the Sun and after the concert (around 9:30pm) to view the Moon, stars, and planets until 11pm.

This concert is proudly sponsored by Terry & Judy Hogan, the Argentum Group at Morgan Stanley, Prospect Bank, Thompson Thrift, Carl Bender & Barbara Brugnaux, and Dick & Betsy Frank.
