The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the appointment of Rebecca McGuire to the position of Principal Oboe. On August 30, 2020, the THSO welcomed several candidates to an audition adjudicated by Artistic Director David Bowden, Principal Flute Joyce Wilson, Principal Clarinet Samantha Johnson-Helms, and Principal Bassoon Chad Roseland. Ms. McGuire’s beautiful tone, exquisite musicality, and proven leadership make her a strong addition to the symphony.

The symphony will dearly miss our long-time Principal Oboe, William Denton, who decided to retire from the position following the 2019-2020 season. Mr. Denton was instrumental as a musician leader serving on the Player’s Committee for several years. His phenomenal tenure of over 50 years will be honored during the 2020-2021 season.

McGuire currently holds positions as Principal Oboe in the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and Oboist of the Volante Winds, a highly acclaimed wind quintet with recent performances at the American Music Festival (NC), Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival (AK), and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea.

Known for her beautifully sincere and expressive musicality, McGuire was frequently featured as principal oboe with the elite orchestras of Indiana University. There she received special acclaim for her performances of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, Debussy’s La Mer with conductor Scott Sandmeier of the Orchestre de Chambre de la Gironde in France, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in concert with Joshua Bell, conducted by Xian Zhang.

In 2018, Ms. McGuire made her debut as an international soloist, performing Telemann’s Oboe Concerto in F minor and the Samuel Barber Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings with the Freies Kammerorchester Köln, Ensemble 07 under the direction of award-winning violinist and Baroque specialist, Stephan Schardt in Cologne, Germany.

Originally from Illinois, McGuire is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and Western Illinois University. She is currently finishing a Doctor of Music degree in Oboe Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where she studied with oboist Roger Roe of the Indianapolis Symphony, as well as famous pedagogue and former Metropolitan Opera oboist, Linda Strommen.
