THSO Presents! Divine Interludes — A Celebration of Beauty in Sound and Space

Church of the Immaculate Conception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

On Sunday October 5, 2025 at 4pm, the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is delighted to return to the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods for an afternoon of beautiful chamber music featuring THSO Principal Strings and Principal Woodwinds. Divine Interludes will celebrate the beauty of music performed in a venue renowned for its cathedral-like architecture and superb acoustics, offering audiences a rich and intimate musical experience. The program includes:

Jacques Ibert – Cinq pièces en trio for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon

A delightful set of five miniatures, Ibert’s trio is full of wit, charm, and French flair. Each movement offers a unique character, from playful to lyrical, showcasing the colorful interplay between the woodwinds.

Luigi Boccherini – Selections from Quintet Op. 17, No. 5 and No. 6 for flute and string quartet

This concert will feature Principal Flute Angela Reynolds and Principal Oboe Rebecca McGuire.

Boccherini’s quintets are known for their graceful melodies and refined classical style. These selections highlight the flute’s lyrical voice against a warm string backdrop, evoking the elegance of 18th-century chamber salons.

Eugène Bozza – Trois Pièces Pour Une Musique de Nuit for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon

Bozza’s nocturnal trio captures the mystery and serenity of nighttime. With impressionistic textures and subtle rhythmic shifts, the piece invites listeners into a dreamlike soundscape.

Maurice Ravel – String Quartet in F major

A cornerstone of the chamber repertoire, Ravel’s quartet is a masterwork of color, rhythm, and form. Its shimmering textures and emotional depth make it a perfect centerpiece for this sacred setting.

Kyle Johnson, Principal Cello

Jennifer Higdon – Amazing Grace for string quartet

Higdon’s arrangement of the beloved hymn is both reverent and emotionally stirring. With rich harmonies and expressive phrasing, it offers a moment of reflection and spiritual uplift.
