THSO Presents Appalachian Spring at Hatfield Hall on February 7

On Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Roger Kalia invite audiences to experience THSO Presents! – Appalachian Spring, an uplifting chamber concert celebrating the spirit, stories, and soundscapes of America. The performance takes place at Hatfield Hall on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and is part of the orchestra’s popular THSO Presents! Chamber Series

The program is anchored by Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring for 13 instruments, one of the most beloved works in American classical music. Radiant, spacious, and deeply expressive, Copland’s score captures an idealized vision of American optimism and pastoral beauty. The concert also features John Williams’ Air and Simple Gifts for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, a lyrical reflection on Copland’s iconic themes that blends timeless tradition with cinematic warmth.

Additional works on the program include George Gershwin’s Lullaby for strings, showcasing the composer’s early gift for melody and charm, and Ascending Bird for strings and percussion, arranged by Colin Jacobsen, which draws from Persian folklore to create a transcendent and meditative musical journey. Rounding out the program is Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston for flute, clarinet, and piano, a vibrant and expressive work inspired by the poetry and cultural legacy of Langston Hughes, weaving together classical, folk, jazz, and contemporary influences into a rich musical tapestry. The THSO is pleased to welcome Dee Reed who will share selected poetry by Langston Hughes to introduce each movement of Coleman’s piece.

The approximately 75-minute performance offers an intimate and immersive listening experience, highlighting the artistry of THSO musicians in a chamber music setting. VIP ticket holders are invited to attend an exclusive post-concert reception in the Alumni Center at Hatfield Hall, featuring complimentary appetizers and a hosted bar, providing an opportunity to connect with fellow patrons and musicians following the performance.

This concert is made possible through the generous support of Diamond Sponsor Viribus Wealth Management & Partners, Gold Sponsors Stadler & Co. and Daniel & Cheri Bradley, and Silver Sponsors Daniel & Janet Clark. THSO programming is also made possible in part by Arts Illiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
